Join us as we explore an alternative way of recreating on the trail.

Beginning Friday, November 6th, head to a Saratoga PLAN trail to find hidden treasure. Palm-sized painted rocks have been tucked away along stretches of trails throughout Saratoga County. The rocks have been decorated with kind messages, inspirational quotes, and wise sayings. The name of the game? Find and collect painted rocks that mean the most to you. And have fun doing it!

Some suggested uses for your new-found mantra(s): keep one on your nightstand. Place a couple on your doorstep. Gift one to a friend.

Participating trails:

Hennig Preserve in the Town of Galway
Orra Phelps Preserve in the Town of Wilton
Bog Meadow Preserve in Saratoga Springs

*** Rocks will not be hidden or placed more than 1 foot from the trail to protect the delicate vegetation. ***

Where should I be looking?

Rocks will not be hidden or placed more than 1 foot from the trail. Please be mindful of vegetation as you search high and low for the rock that’s just right for you. The three participating trails are mentioned above.

Am I allowed to take rocks home with me?

Yes! After finding the rock(s) that resonate with you, they’re all yours. We recommend 1-2(ish) rocks per person. Please take only painted rocks; removal of other natural items from the preserves is not allowed.

How can I tell others?

We invite you to share your discoveries with others by sharing photos of your adventures on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #saratogaPLANrocks. We also love to “tag” along so be sure to tag @saratogaplan.

The #SaratogaPLANrocks project was made possible by a collaboration between Saratoga PLAN and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. Regeneron’s annual Day For Doing Good pairs Regeneron employees with numerous Capital Region nonprofits to do good in the community. Over 50 Regeneron employees painted and hid over 100 rocks on participating Saratoga PLAN trails. We are so grateful for Regeneron’s partnership in helping us carry out a new, playful way to enjoy the trails.

The #saratogaPLANrocks project was inspired by the nationwide Kindness Rock Project and the Block Island Glass Float Project.
