HWA is an invasive forest aphid-like insect native to Japan that poses a serious threat to Eastern Hemlocks in United States. HWA continues to spread into rural areas of New York State.  The GIS intern will identify and map target areas located on PLAN preserves that will assist PLAN and its partners in protecting key areas from this pest. This project is funded by a grant through the New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP).

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Acquire, analyze, and manage IR imagery
  • Develop work plan and implement methodology for identifying Conifers/Eastern Hemlock using satellite IR imagery and refine results to Eastern Hemlock stands through field conformation
  • Use GPS technology in field to collect data for use in PLAN’s GIS System
  • Maintain detailed, well-organized information systems for all project work including: geodatabase, GIS files, data acquisition, processing, and manipulation
  • Design paper, working, and digital maps
  • Exit documentation – protocol of methods used and geodatabase location for future reference, travel records, and grant reports
  • Develop Web Application or Story Map to depict county wide stands as a tool for public use, if time allows

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate or upper-level undergraduate student currently enrolled in an applicable program/major
  • Ability to travel to properties with a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle
  • Experience using ESRI GIS Software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, and Collector), GPS technology, and map and compass skills
  • Physically able to walk on wooded properties, on and off trail, and engage in strenuous physical activity, comfortable working independently in the field
  • Strong communication and detail-oriented recordkeeping skills
  • Good technical writing skills
  • Commitment to conservation and land stewardship
  • Experience or coursework in the manipulation of four band imagery
  • Capable of differentiating between coniferous tree species native to New York State and an understanding of the interconnection between dendrology and entomology with forest ecology and health

Terms:

This is a seasonal, part-time position that will begin immediately, at the rate of $12.00 per hour.
